Sometimes a shop tells us a story: of the life of its owner, of the life of a city. In the apparently haphazard arrangement of objects, one detects a narrative, spanning time periods with distinct aesthetics, identities, and cultural referents. Standing behind the counter of his well-ordered but crowded watch store, Mr. Auz talks to us about his neighborhood fútbol league, while we take note of the vintage watch advertisements, a retro calendar clock and classic mid-century chair, a perfect Brownie camera, and a "very antique" iron. Leaving the store, we felt happily unsettled, as if we had traveled through Quito's history, in no particular order.
